A joint project produced a fully 3D-printed aluminum V8 block using metal additive manufacturing. The prototype shows what is possible, not what is coming to a dealership soon.

A fully 3D-printed aluminum V8 engine block exists. Nikon SLM Solutions and Bosch Industry Consulting built it in the summer of 2026 using metal additive manufacturing, specifically selective laser melting. The block is a single-piece design with internal cooling channels integrated directly into the structure. No casting. No custom tooling. Just a digital file sent to a massive metal printer.

This is not the first time someone has done this. A German team printed a functional aluminum engine block for Volkswagen back in 2016. That prototype weighed 55 pounds and went through VW's internal inspection. The 2026 version is more refined, but the concept is the same: prove that additive manufacturing can handle the extreme pressures, temperatures, and tolerances inside an engine.

Bosch had already invested millions in metal additive manufacturing before this project. The company opened a dedicated metal 3D printing center in Germany equipped with Nikon SLM Solutions' NXG XII 600 system. The goal was to produce complex metal components for automotive and industrial use, with engine blocks as a showcase for the technology's capabilities.

Porsche tried a similar approach in 2020 with a fully 3D-printed electric drive unit housing. That design combined the motor and gearbox into a single component, reducing part count and improving stiffness under load. Those are real engineering benefits, and they are the kinds of gains automakers care about.

Still, do not expect to buy a car with a 3D-printed engine anytime soon. Additive manufacturing works best alongside traditional processes, not as a wholesale replacement. It is a tool for creating complex geometries, shortening development cycles, and producing low-volume specialized components. For now, that means engine blocks will remain in the prototyping and motorsport categories, not the family sedan lineup.
