Belgian service bureau 3iD is installing AM-Flow's automated sorting line at its Torhout facility, adding machine vision and no-label part ID to keep pace with growing production volumes.

The real bottleneck in industrial 3D printing is rarely the printer itself. It is what happens the moment the machine stops: picking up parts, identifying which order they belong to, and routing them through finishing steps. Belgian service bureau 3iD Printing is tackling that problem head-on with a full AM-Flow automated post-processing line at its Torhout facility.

How the Line Works

The installation combines three AM-Flow systems. AM-Feed automatically separates printed parts as they come off the build plate. AM-Vision then identifies each part using machine vision, reading geometry instead of relying on labels or QR codes. AM-Sort routes each part to the correct order, next finishing step, or final shipping destination. Every step logs a traceable record from print to shipment.

That last detail matters more than it sounds. 3iD serves aerospace, automotive, and medical clients, industries where traceability is not optional. A fully documented, automated chain from raw print to packed order is a differentiator when competing for that kind of work.

Why Now

Dave Vanhove, founder of 3iD, put it plainly: production volumes are growing, and the manual work of sorting and labelling does not scale with them. "Innovation has always been central to how we operate," he said. "As production volumes continue to grow, we are continuously looking for technologies that help us improve efficiency while maintaining the quality and flexibility our customers expect."

AM-Flow, based in Eindhoven, has been building its automation stack since 2018. Its customers already include BMW, Shapeways, and Midwest Prototyping. The 3iD deal extends that list and adds another data point to the case that post-processing automation is finally becoming a standard factory-floor investment, not a research project.

What It Means for the Industry

Most additive manufacturing conversations focus on print speed, new materials, or larger build volumes. Post-processing gets less attention, even though it is where the real cost and time penalties accumulate at production scale. A system that removes manual sorting from the equation changes the economics of a print farm in a way that a faster hotend does not.

For shops running high-mix, high-volume operations, the question is no longer whether to automate post-processing, but how quickly they can justify the capital outlay. 3iD's move suggests that justification has arrived for at least some mid-size European service providers.
