Before you replace that broken mixer, fridge clip, or chair foot, a 3D printer and a few grams of filament might save it.

Most breaks are one small plastic part

When something fails around the house, the instinct is to replace the whole thing. A new fridge shelf, a new chair foot, sometimes a whole appliance. The catch is that it is rarely the whole thing that broke. It is a clip, a gear, or a foot, and a 3D printer can often make that part for a few cents in filament.

Stand mixer worm gear

If your KitchenAid or Cuisinart stand mixer stops turning an attachment, do not assume the motor died. The worm gear is designed to strip first, sacrificing itself to protect the motor. iFixit publishes a full teardown for popular models, and makers on Printables have uploaded replacement gears for specific mixers because people keep needing them. Keep a spare gear file on hand before you need it, and move the old grease to the new part when you reassemble.

Refrigerator door clips

Fridge door shelves fail one clip at a time, not all at once. OEM guards run $15 to $50, but there is a large library of printable clips, end caps, and bin guards for Samsung, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Kenmore fridges on Thingiverse and Printables. These designs are model specific, so match your exact model number before printing. If nothing fits, measure the broken clip and use a parametric design you can resize.

Vacuum belts and wheels

Vacuum belts are one of the most common repairs there is, usually a cheap part and a few minutes with the bottom plate off. People have printed their own in flexible TPU for years, including parametric cogged belts built as stand-ins for discontinued OEM parts. Printed wheels show up too. Where a printed version earns its keep is when the part for your model is discontinued, back-ordered, or more expensive than the few grams of TPU it would take.

Cabinet hinge reinforcers

The most common cabinet failure is not the hinge, it is the wood around it. Concealed hinge screws pull out of soft particleboard, and the door starts sagging. Rather than replace the whole door, print a reinforcement plate that gives the screws fresh material to bite into. Similar prints exist for snapped drawer glide brackets.

Dining chair feet

Chair feet are almost never sold as standalone parts, which means a worn foot often leads people to replace the chair. Measure the post and print a replacement foot, or a shim that levels a wobbly leg. It is a twenty-minute print that beats a trip to the furniture store.

Before you print

Match the model number, prefer a parametric design you can tweak, and reach for TPU when the part needs to flex. A printed fix will not always beat a cheap in-stock OEM part, but when that part is gone, a 3D printer turns 'replace the whole thing' into 'print the one piece that broke.'
