German startup act'ble has spent six years refining a modular 3D printed pointe shoe that lasts five times longer than traditional pairs.
Professional ballet dancers can burn through hundreds of pairs of pointe shoes in a single year. New York City Ballet alone spends close to a million dollars annually on them. The shoes wear out fast, they are handmade one by one, and there is still no mainstream way to recycle them.
German startup act'ble thinks 3D printing can change that equation.
A Design That Has Barely Changed in 200 Years
The pointe shoe as we know it emerged in the 19th century. Shoemakers layer fabric, paper, glue, and satin around a wooden last to build the rigid toe box. That process has stayed roughly the same ever since.
The result is a shoe that fits the tradition of ballet, not necessarily the foot. Dancers have to break in every pair by hand, pad it, and often reshape it. The shank softens after a day or two of use. Chronic foot pain is built into the profession.
The Modular Approach
act'ble replaces the monolithic construction with three separate parts: a 3D printed sole, a knitted outer skin, and a set of laces.
The sole is the most important piece. It is printed in TPU, a flexible material that behaves differently depending on how the dancer moves. Laser-cut segments in the sole stay flat while the foot is down, then lock together as the dancer rises onto the tips of the toes. In traditional shoes, the company says, natural walking motion is simply not possible.
The knitted skin wraps around the 3D printed core like a sock. It spreads pressure across the whole foot instead of pushing all the load onto the toes. The laces click into the sole and wrap around the foot, lifting weight away from the toes entirely. They come in three widths, so beginners and advanced dancers with higher arches can both find a fit.
From Thesis to Production
Founder Sophia Lindner is a former ballet dancer who trained for 14 years before studying design. In 2018 she built a pointe shoe prototype for her bachelor's thesis and called it React. She never intended to sell it, but dancers and choreographers who tried it asked for more.
act'ble went through more than 100 design iterations before settling on the current version. Early prototypes came off a laser sintering machine every couple of days. Today the soles are produced on HP Multi Jet Fusion lines at Something Added, a Barcelona-based manufacturer that specializes in additive manufacturing for footwear.
Longevity and Sustainability
Because the shoe is modular, dancers do not have to throw the whole thing away when one part wears out. They can replace the sole, the skin, or the laces individually. act'ble claims its shoes last five times longer than conventional pairs.
That matters for both cost and waste. If a single pair replaces five traditional ones, the price per use drops sharply. And fewer shoes going to landfill after a single day of stage work is a meaningful win for an industry that has never seriously addressed its environmental footprint.
What It Means for the Industry
Pointe shoes are an unusual product. The market is small, the users are demanding, and tradition runs deep. Most big footwear companies have ignored it. That has left room for a startup to rewrite the rules.
act'ble is not the first company to 3D print dance shoes, but it is one of the few to take the approach seriously enough to move from prototype to production at scale. If the shoe holds up under professional stage conditions, it could become the first mainstream alternative to handmade pointe shoes in generations.
