A German startup is selling pointe shoes with 3D printed inner soles that dancers can swap individually, replacing the whole shoe less often.

Actble, a German dancewear company founded by former ballet dancer Sophia Lindner, is now shipping a 3D printed pointe shoe designed to last five times longer than the traditional pairs dancers burn through every few weeks.

The key change is modular. Actble splits the shoe into three pieces: a 3D printed inner sole, a compression-fit knitted outer skin, and standard laces. When the sole wears down from rehearsals and performances, the dancer replaces just that piece instead of the entire shoe. The outer skin stays in place.

That approach matters because pointe shoes wear out fast. Dancers can go through a pair every 10 to 20 hours of use. Professional companies buy hundreds of pairs per year per dancer. A modular design that extends sole life by five times cuts both cost and waste significantly.

The inner soles are manufactured in partnership with Something Added, a UK-based 3D printing service. The two companies designed the lattice structure inside the sole to balance cushioning with durability. The exact geometry is proprietary, but the goal is straightforward: absorb impact at the toe box while keeping the shoe light enough for extended wear.

Actble is not the first company to try 3D printing in dancewear. Several startups have experimented with custom-fit insoles and reinforced toe boxes. What sets Actble apart is the replaceable-sole concept. Instead of printing an entire shoe, which can look and feel strange to classically trained dancers, Actble keeps the familiar external shape while upgrading the part that actually wears out.

The shoes are available direct to consumers and to dance companies through a B2B channel. Pricing is higher than entry-level canvas pointe shoes but below custom-fitted options from heritage makers. For dancers who burn through multiple pairs per month, the longer lifespan can offset the upfront cost within a season.

Feedback from the ballet community has been cautiously positive. Dancers report the fit feels familiar out of the box. The modularity is harder to sell to dancers raised on the ritual of breaking in a new pair, but the cost and convenience arguments are winning some converts. Companies appreciate the reduced logistics burden of shipping fewer replacement shoes.

The partnership with Something Added also gives Actble a scalable production path. 3D printing individual soles means the company does not need to hold large inventories of finished shoes. It can print on demand and assemble as orders arrive. That model is especially useful for B2B sales where sizing varies across a cast of dancers.

Wear testing over the past year showed the 3D printed soles held up to roughly five times the usage of a standard leather and canvas sole before needing replacement. The exact number depends on the dancer, the repertoire, and the floor surface, but the margin is large enough to change the economics of shoe purchasing for most companies.

For the wider 3D printing industry, Actble's shoe is a tidy example of how additive manufacturing can solve specific wear problems without replacing an entire mature product category. The pointe shoe has not changed much in a century. A 3D printed insert is a low-risk way to improve it.
