Clothing that reads your skin first

Most clothes start with a size chart. Laura Civetti's latest project starts with the person wearing them. Her research, called Adaptive System, builds garments from skin data and body scans rather than standard measurements, so the design follows the body instead of forcing the body into a shape.

Civetti describes the work as a move away from clothing the body simply wears toward clothing the body collaborates with. The pieces are produced with 3D printing, which lets a pattern shift from one wearer's geometry to the next without retooling a factory.

Why skin data, not a size label

A size chart compresses a body into a handful of numbers. Skin data captures how the surface actually sits, moves, and stretches. Civetti uses that information to drive the form of each piece, treating the wearer's own geometry as the primary input rather than a pattern borrowed from a rack.

The result is a research project more than a product line. Adaptive System is a statement about where personalized making could go once scanning and printing sit close enough to feed each other directly.

Where this fits in 3D printed fashion

Additive manufacturing has spent years edging into fashion through rigid prints, lattice structures, and statement pieces. The bottleneck has been fit: printed garments often look fixed rather than worn. Projects like Civetti's point at the next step, where the file is generated from the body and the clothing is effectively bespoke by default.

It is early. Scanning, design automation, and comfortable printable materials still need to meet in one workflow before this reaches a closet near you. But the direction is clear, and it reframes 3D printing as a tailor rather than a mold.
