Additive Assurance partnered with NTT DATA XAM to deploy its AMiRIS quality monitoring system across Japan's metal 3D printing market.
The hardest problem in metal 3D printing is trust
A part comes off a metal printer. Is it sound? For years the honest answer was: you find out after it fails. Additive Assurance, an Australian company, builds a system that watches the build in real time and flags defects as they happen. This week it signed a deal to bring that technology to Japan.
The company partnered with NTT DATA XAM Technologies, a firm that has distributed EOS machines in Japan since 1993. XAM will sell, install, and support the AMiRIS platform, and link it to existing metal printers including EOS and AMCM systems.
What AMiRIS actually does
AMiRIS is a monitoring layer for powder bed fusion machines. It collects data during the print and checks part quality while the build is still running. The goal is to catch problems early enough that a bad run gets stopped before it wastes time and expensive metal.
Marten Jurg, CEO of Additive Assurance, said the partnership will help Japanese manufacturers move from one-off prints toward stable, high-volume production. That is the barrier that has kept metal additive manufacturing out of many factories. The machines can make the parts. Proving every part is good is the part nobody solved cheaply.
Why Japan, why now
Japan has a dense base of precision manufacturers and a deep reluctance to adopt a process they cannot verify. Real-time quality assurance is the missing piece for mass production with metal 3D printing. By riding on top of machines already installed by XAM, AMiRIS avoids the hardest part of any industrial sale: getting in the door.
Metal printing has spent years as a tool for prototypes and exotic aerospace parts. If monitoring like this works at scale, the technology finally earns its place on the factory floor. That is the bet behind this partnership.
