Additive Assurance has signed with NTT DATA XAM to launch its AMiRIS real-time quality-assurance system for metal 3D printing in Japan.

Metal 3D printing's quality problem just got a Japan-sized answer

Australian in-situ quality-assurance specialist Additive Assurance has signed a distribution agreement with NTT DATA XAM Technologies Corp. (XAM) to launch its real-time quality-assurance platform, AMiRIS, in the Japanese market. The deal puts one of the additive manufacturing industry's most discussed defect-detection systems into the hands of a partner that has been entrenched in Japanese metal AM since the early 1990s.

What AMiRIS actually does

AMiRIS is designed for in-process quality assurance in laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Rather than inspecting a part after the build is finished, the system captures deviations layer by layer as the job runs. Hardware-wise it is deliberately simple: an imaging box strapped to the side of a metal printer, observing the melt pool through the machine's optical window from an off-axis vantage point. In principle it can attach to any PBF machine with a window.

Sensing units are installed across a fleet of machines and stream captured data to a central server, where GPU compute instances locate anomalies in melt-pool emissions. The platform is available either as a scalable cloud service or as a local installation — the latter mattering for controlled aerospace and defense environments where data cannot leave the building.

Why the timing matters

The pitch is that AMiRIS shifts quality control from reactive to real-time, creating auditable evidence teams can store long-term rather than a pile of charts nobody reads. As Additive Assurance's CCO put it, aerospace engineers 'do not need more charts. They need reliable evidence that can be verified and stored long-term.' That is the gap the company is closing between academic process monitoring and industrial-grade quality assurance.

Why NTT DATA XAM is the right partner

XAM is no casual reseller. Since becoming the sole distributor of EOS in Japan in 1993, the company has built what it describes as the country's deepest experience in metal AM application development, material development, serial production, testing, and quality assurance — backed by a JIS Q 9100 (AS9100D-equivalent) registration for aerospace and defense work. That combination of machine footprint and certification credibility is exactly what a layer-by-layer QA product needs to win trust in regulated industries.

The bigger picture

The Japan move is part of a wider push to standardize process data across heterogeneous metal printer fleets. Additive Assurance has also partnered with Additive Industries to integrate AMiRIS with the MetalFab portfolio (including the new MetalFab 300 Flex), and recently launched AMiRIS-LF for large-format additive manufacturing. The through-line: uniform, real-time quality assurance whether you run one machine or a hundred from different vendors.

What it means for the shop floor

For metal AM users, the promise is fewer scrapped builds and defensible quality records — without turning every manufacturing order into a forensic investigation. As metal printing scales into serial production, that kind of automated, standardized assurance is quickly moving from nice-to-have to the price of admission.
