Anycubic built a multicolor 3D printer that puts four filaments inside the toolhead instead of in a side box, and it costs less than many single-color rivals.

The Anycubic Kobra X is the most interesting budget printer this year because it solves the biggest headache of multicolor printing without forcing you to buy a bulky add-on. Most consumer printers keep the color-changing hardware in a separate box on the side. The Kobra X puts it inside the printhead. That shorter filament path cuts waste, speeds up color swaps, and makes the machine easier to fit on a crowded desk.

What Makes the Kobra X Different

The key specification is the ACE GEN2 system built into the toolhead. It stores four filaments and can swap colors in about 35 seconds. On a typical multicolor model, that speed adds up to hours saved compared to a printer with an external AMS-style feeder. Independent tests show the Kobra X finishing a four-color model nearly ten hours faster than the Bambu Lab A1, while using about 150 grams of purge material to the A1's 229 grams.

The build volume is 260 by 260 by 260 mm. That is slightly larger than the 256 mm standard many mid-size printers use. The extra space is not dramatic, but it is enough to print larger enclosures, mechanical parts, or architectural models without hitting the limits.

Performance and Print Quality

Print quality is strong for a machine in this price band. First layers are consistent thanks to a 49-point auto-leveling system. Overhangs come out clean to around 45 degrees without needing special settings. The maximum recommended speed is 300 mm/s, though most users will get the best results between 140 and 200 mm/s. The 600 mm/s figure in the spec sheet is a marketing peak, not a practical setting.

The magnetic PEI build plate is double-sided, giving you a smooth side for PLA and a textured side for ABS and PETG. Filament runout handling is one of the better implementations I have seen: when a spool empties, the printer pauses, cuts the filament, and ejects the remaining tail through channels in the toolhead. That means no more prying PTFE tubes apart to recover the last meter of a roll.

Where It Compromises

No printer at this price is perfect. The Kobra X uses an open frame, which means large ABS or polycarbonate prints can suffer from drafts and temperature swings. An enclosure helps a lot, but that is an extra purchase. The firmware is closed. There is Klipper underneath, but you do not get access to configure it, and the alternative Rinkhals firmware does not support this model. If you want a hackable printer, look elsewhere.

The in-head ACE GEN2 system cannot dry filament. The external ACE Pro units can, but they are not backward-compatible with older Kobra accessories. If you print with wet PETG or PVA, you will still need a separate dryer.

The Verdict

The Anycubic Kobra X is not just another clone with a lower price tag. The in-head color system is a genuine engineering improvement that makes multicolor printing faster and less wasteful than the competition. Print quality is strong, the feature set is practical, and the $299 starting price is aggressive. The main question is whether Anycubic will support the machine long-term. The company has a history of rapid product churn, and parts availability for older models can be inconsistent. If you want a printer you can rely on for years, the Bambu Lab A1 remains the safer choice. If you want the most multicolor capability for the least money right now, the Kobra X is hard to beat.
