Your 3D prints can burn. Here is which filaments are most dangerous, what fumes they release, and how to print safely.
Not All Filaments Burn the Same
A YouTube video from Maker's Muse sparked this question: are 3D prints actually flammable? The short answer is yes. The longer answer depends entirely on which filament you used and how dense the print is.
PLA catches fire easiest. It burns at relatively low temperatures and releases volatile organic compounds when it does. ABS also ignites, but the bigger problem is what comes out when it burns: carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. PETG is more resistant. It will melt before it flames. TPU is the least flammable of the common filaments.
The Print Settings That Matter
A study from the FAA tested exactly how FFF print parameters affect flammability. Material type mattered most. Infill percentage was second. Wall thickness came third. Infill pattern, raster angle, and orientation changed things only when combined with those three.
A hollow print with 10 percent infill will burn differently than a solid block of the same material. More plastic means more fuel. Less plastic means less heat release, but the part can still ignite and drip.
What to Do If Your Printer Catches Fire
Thermal runaway is the main risk. If the temperature sensor fails or the firmware glitches, the nozzle can overheat until something nearby ignites. Keep printers away from curtains, paper, and other combustibles. Never leave a long print unattended. Enclosures help, but only if they do not trap heat against flammable parts.
Ventilation matters too. Even normal printing releases ultrafine particles. A HEPA filter with activated carbon reduces both particles and VOCs. If you print ABS or nylon in a closed room, you are breathing more than just heat.
The Bottom Line
PLA is fine for desk toys and prototypes. It is a poor choice for anything near a heat source. ABS works for functional parts, but only in well-ventilated spaces. PETG is the safest all-rounder for household use. TPU will not ignite, but it still melts. No filament is fireproof. Treat every print as combustible until proven otherwise.
