A Bengaluru startup says its fully integrated FFSC engine, built using industrial 3D printing, will be revealed on August 8.
India's private space sector is about to cross a threshold. Astrobase, a Bengaluru-based space-tech startup, will unveil what it calls the country's first fully integrated 80-tonne-class Full Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) rocket engine on August 8. The engine is built using industrial 3D printing.
Full Flow Staged Combustion is one of the most advanced rocket engine cycles in existence. Both the fuel and oxidizer pass through separate preburners before entering the main combustion chamber. The setup delivers higher efficiency and specific impulse than conventional staged combustion cycles, but it also demands extremely tight tolerances. That is where 3D printing enters the picture.
By printing the engine components, Astrobase can achieve complex internal geometries that would be difficult or impossible to machine traditionally. The 80-tonne-class rating means the engine produces roughly 780 kilonewtons of thrust, enough to power a medium-lift rocket.
The announcement makes India one of a small number of countries pursuing FFSC technology. The startup has already drawn government backing for a high-thrust version, and the August reveal will mark the first time the fully integrated engine is shown publicly.
