Backflip AI is live with a CAD copilot that converts STL files and 3D scans into editable parametric models in Autodesk Fusion.

After 16 months of waitlist limbo, Backflip AI has finally launched its CAD copilot: an AI tool that takes 3D scans, STL files, and mesh data and converts them into fully editable, parametric CAD models. The product debuted on August 3, 2026, and is available now as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and as a standalone web app.

What the tool actually does

Upload a mesh file, and Backflip's AI generates a parametric CAD model with a feature tree you can edit. You export the result as a STEP file or open it directly inside Fusion. The pitch is simple: instead of rebuilding a scanned or downloaded mesh from scratch, you get a starting point with editable operations.

Backflip CEO Greg Mark, one of the Markforged founders, says the company spent the past year rebuilding the AI model from scratch after scrapping an earlier version that produced what he called unnatural, hard-to-edit CAD. The new foundation model was designed to generate models the way a human engineer would build them.

Two modes, different price points

The platform offers two processing modes. Fast Mode generates four CAD model variations in seconds. The options can look quite different from each other, since each one may rely on a different set of operations. Thinking Mode produces one result and takes longer, but is meant to deliver a more faithful reproduction of the original mesh.

Pricing runs on a credit system. Fast Mode costs 10 credits per conversion, Thinking Mode costs 50. Credits are purchased through subscription tiers, and the effective cost per job works out to roughly $1.52 to $10 depending on the tier and mode.

Where it works, and where it is going

Autodesk Fusion is the first and currently only supported CAD platform. An Onshape add-in is expected within weeks, and Mark confirmed a Solidworks plugin is also in development. Dassault Systèmes originally declined the Solidworks integration, but Mark says the relationship has improved since then.

Honest assessment

Engineering.com editor Michael Alba tested the tool and found it genuinely useful, but not perfect. On a simple toaster oven knob mesh, Fast Mode produced four variations that all missed small details like a notch and a thin wall. Thinking Mode caught more of those details but still fell short of a perfect reproduction. On a more complex example part called the Adaptor Ring, Thinking Mode produced a near-flawless result while Fast Mode failed on all four attempts.

The honest take: this is a real product, not vaporware, and it does shorten the path from scan to editable CAD. It is not a replacement for a skilled CAD user on complex geometry. If you regularly need to digitise physical parts, the cost per conversion is reasonable. If you are expecting one-click perfection on anything beyond simple shapes, lower your expectations.
