A new AI tool from Backflip converts 3D scans and STL files into parametric CAD models in minutes, not hours.
Reverse-engineering a physical part into CAD has always been tedious work. A machinist or engineer would spend hours recreating dimensions by hand, often at a cost of $1,500 or more per part. Backflip AI says that changes now.
The company has launched an AI copilot for CAD available as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and a standalone web app. The tool takes 3D scans, STL files, and other mesh data and converts them into fully editable parametric models. Backflip claims a typical part that once cost $1,500 to reverse-engineer can now be done for around $10 in minutes.
The system runs on a second-generation foundation model built specifically for 3D geometry. Rather than treating 3D comprehension as a side effect of general training, Backflip trained the model on CAD operations as a first-class primitive. The AI learns to break down bulk geometry and rebuild it feature by feature: extruding, revolving, patterning, and so on. The output carries a full feature tree that opens directly in CAD software, so an engineer can keep working where the AI left off.
Early customers already include a top automotive manufacturer. Backflip says plugins for additional CAD packages are coming later this year. For shops drowning in scan-to-CAD backlog, the timing is good.
