A new AI tool from Backflip AI converts 3D scans and STL files into fully editable parametric CAD in minutes, cutting the cost of reverse engineering from about $1,500 to roughly $10 per part.
The Problem
Most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their physical parts. When a legacy component breaks and the original CAD file is long gone, engineers face a choice: wait weeks for a manual reverse-engineering contract, or machine a replacement from a 3D scan without a proper feature tree. Neither option is cheap or fast.
The digitization step has cost roughly $1,500 per part for years. That price has not come down because the underlying task still requires a skilled CAD operator to trace geometry, rebuild sketches, and assemble a feature tree by hand.
What Backflip AI Built
Backflip AI has made its second-generation CAD foundation model generally available as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and a standalone web application. The model ingests 3D scans, STL files, and other mesh data, then outputs fully editable parametric CAD with a complete feature history. The company says turnaround runs from one to five minutes per part, compared to hours or days of skilled reverse-engineering labor.
The model was trained to construct geometry the way an engineer does it: extrude, revolve, pattern, chamfer, fillet, in sequence. The resulting feature tree follows real modeling conventions, so the output opens in Fusion or any CAD package and stays editable. Agent loops sit on top: the system reconstructs the mesh, evaluates its own output, then iterates on fidelity and dimensional accuracy before presenting the final model.
Two Modes, Broad Compatibility
Fast mode handles standard geometries in a couple of minutes. Thinking mode allocates more compute to complex parts. The tool is optimized for moderate-complexity 3-axis milled and turned components, which covers the bulk of industrial spare-part needs.
A companion feature called Multimodal AI Search lets teams find existing CAD by typing a description or snapping a photo. A phone picture of a sketch can pull a matching bracket out of a company's internal archive, which addresses the duplicate-modeling problem that plagues larger engineering organizations.
The web app exports STEP files for any mechanical CAD package. Plugins for additional CAD platforms are expected later this year.
Pricing and Adoption
Free accounts include four reconstructions. Paid tiers start at $20 per month, with Builder, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans scaling up from there. The technology is already in production at an unnamed top automotive manufacturer, according to the company.
What It Means
Scanning hardware has been cheap and accessible for years. The bottleneck was always the CAD reconstruction step that turned a point cloud into something an engineer could actually edit and manufacture from. Backflip AI's approach attacks that bottleneck directly: if the output cost drops from $1,500 to $10, the economics of maintaining digital spare parts libraries change completely.
The broader industrial AM space has been looking for this capability. Hexagon paired its ATLASCAN Pro handheld scanner with Geomagic Design X in July for aviation and defense MRO, claiming CAD rebuilds up to eight times faster than conventional tools. 3YOURMIND's Technical Drawing Analysis reads legacy 2D drawings to identify parts that need digitizing. Backflip AI's entry is the first to promise sub-$20 per-part pricing at production scale.
