Backflip AI launched a Drawing to CAD tool at Autodesk University that converts 2D engineering drawings into parametric 3D models for Fusion.

Backflip AI has released a new Drawing to CAD tool that converts 2D engineering drawings into editable parametric 3D models. The launch happened at Autodesk University, with the first integration available for Autodesk Fusion.

The system reads dimensions and views from a standard engineering drawing, then reconstructs a parametric model with a full feature tree. Engineers can inspect the design history inside Fusion and edit it directly.

Backflip says the tool addresses a real manufacturing headache: factories often have 3D CAD files for less than 1% of their equipment. When a part breaks, there is no digital model to reproduce it. The company estimates a reconstruction job that normally takes two to three days and costs around $1,500 can now be completed in 30 minutes for $10 or less.

In tandem with the Drawing to CAD release, Backflip also launched a multi-shot Photo to CAD tool. This lets users generate CAD models from photos taken on a mobile phone.

The company already offered text-to-CAD and 3D scan-to-CAD products. Drawing to CAD and Photo to CAD round out the lineup, giving engineers three ways to get legacy designs into an editable digital format.

Greg Mark, founder and CEO of Backflip, said: 'Many factories have 3D CAD for less than 1% of their equipment. When a part breaks, they do not have a 3D model immediately available, and it is a huge scramble to prevent a production line from going down.'

What This Means for Makers

The tool is aimed at professional engineers, but the underlying technology is relevant to anyone who works with CAD. Getting a scanned or photographed part into an editable parametric model faster means shorter turnaround on replacement parts and custom modifications.

Backflip plans additional CAD platform integrations beyond Fusion later this year. For now, the Drawing to CAD tool is generally available through the Fusion add-in and as a standalone web application.
