Bambu Lab's new PLA Pure certifies every ingredient for food contact and toy safety, aiming to make desktop printing safer in homes with kids and pets.

What makes PLA Pure different

Bambu Lab's new PLA Pure is built around a single constraint: every ingredient has to be safe enough to have in a home with children and pets. The company says most filaments marketed as food-safe are tested only as finished spools. PLA Pure is verified ingredient by ingredient, from the base resin to the color pigments.

The formula contains five components. Polylactic acid derived from corn and sugarcane forms the base. The acrylic copolymer comes from materials used in children's toys. Color pigments match what appears in baby tableware. EBS, an additive familiar from food packaging films, helps with flow. The talc filler is independently tested and asbestos-free.

Indoor air quality and toy safety

Because these printers sit on desks and in living rooms, emissions matter. PLA Pure carries UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification, which measures particulate and VOC output during printing. Bambu Lab says tests on its A1 and A2L printers showed lower PM2.5 and PM10 levels than a comparable filament under the same conditions, and below typical background levels in a kitchen or living room. Ventilation is still recommended.

The material also passes EN 71-3, the European standard for toy material safety. That covers heavy metal migration when a child handles, mouths, or swallows an object. The certification makes the filament suitable for printed toys, kitchen models, and cat toys, though small parts and sharp edges still require normal supervision.

Printing without additives

Most PLA filaments use impact modifiers and flow agents to achieve consistent extrusion. Bambu Lab rebuilt the formulation from scratch to keep the ingredient count at five. The company claims the result prints cleaner, strings less, and requires less post-processing than typical third-party PLA, without sacrificing the mechanical performance users expect from PLA Basic.

All parameters are stored on an RFID tag and read automatically by Bambu's AMS system. The filament is available now in the Bambu Lab store at $24.99 with a spool and $21.99 as a refill.

The bottom line

PLA Pure does not claim to make every 3D-printed object food-safe. The layered structure of FFF prints prevents liquid food contact, and PLA softens above 60°C. What it does offer is a fully documented ingredient profile, verified at the raw material level rather than only at the spool. For households where printers run around children and pets, that documentation is the actual product.
