Bambu Lab patented a camera-based routine that lets a printer measure and fix its own nozzle alignment.

A printer that checks its own alignment

Bambu Lab has been filing patents at a steady clip, and a fresh batch of nine new filings this year lays out where the company is heading. One of the clearest ideas is a printer that calibrates itself by looking at what it just printed.

The patent, numbered CN120096089 and assigned to Shenzhen Tuozhu Technology (Bambu Lab's corporate name), describes a calibration method rather than a new machine. The printer lays down two parallel test lines, an onboard camera photographs them, and software measures the offset between the lines. From that, it works out how far the toolhead is out of alignment and compensates for it.

Why this matters for dual nozzles

Aligning two nozzles is harder than it sounds. If they are even slightly off, the two materials land in the wrong place and you get gaps and blobs. Manual methods rely on printing a test pattern and measuring it with calipers, which is slow and easy to get wrong.

Bambu's approach uses the machine's own camera and vision processing instead. The patent spells out the details that make it reliable: it prints a base layer first, uses contrasting filament colors so the camera can see the lines clearly, and starts the test extrusions outside the measurement zone so the messy start and end of each line do not confuse the math.

The bigger signal

This is a method patent, not a product. Do not expect a box labeled with these features tomorrow. But it points at where Bambu is spending its engineering attention: taking the fiddly parts of printing and handing them to software.

Dual-extrusion machines like the H2D and H2C stand to gain the most. Clean automatic alignment would remove one of the last real arguments against running two materials in a single job. If the feature ships, it continues the trend that made Bambu popular in the first place, a printer that sets itself up while you walk away.
