Why your printer choice decides the prop
Cosplay props split cleanly into two camps. Small, highly detailed pieces like faces, gems, and intricate armor trim want a resin printer. Large pieces like full helmets, breastplates, and shoulder cannons are too big for most resin beds, so they go to an FDM machine.
Pick the wrong tool and you will spend weeks sanding layer lines or gluing a resin print back together after it shatters in transit. Get it right and the post work drops to a quick prime and paint.

Resin wins on surface quality. A 4K or 6K mono screen throws detail that FDM cannot touch, which matters for anything worn close to the camera.

Tips that save you from a ruined build
- Scale in your slicer before printing. A model built for a 1.8m person will not fit a 1.6m wearer without a resize.
- Split big parts with dovetails or locating pins. Glue up after printing so nothing exceeds your bed.
- Print helmets with the opening down and add a brim. Warp at the rim ruins the seal against your face.
- Sand FDM layer lines with 200 then 400 grit, fill seams with spot putty, and prime twice.
- Resin prints need a quick cure and a wash, then a spray filler to hide the print texture.
Which should you buy first
If your builds are masks, small props, and detailed trims, start with a resin printer. If you want helmets, armor, and weapons, start with an FDM machine. Plenty of cosplayers end up owning both, and that combination covers nearly every costume on the board.
