Decibel Made used large-format robotic AM to produce 30 custom benches for Justin Bieber's SKYLRK OASIS at Coachella, finishing in under three weeks.

30 Benches, Three Weeks, Two States

Most people remember Coachella for the headliners. This year, one of the most talked-about installations had nothing to do with the main stage. Inside SKYLRK OASIS, Justin Bieber's invite-only activation, visitors sat on 30 large-scale 3D printed benches arranged in circular clusters around palm trees. The installation was designed by SKYLRK, engineered by New Jersey studio Decibel Made, and fabricated with help from Italian robotic manufacturing company Caracol.

The timeline is the part that stands out. Decibel co-founder Adam Hecht told 3DPrint.com that design and prototyping started in early March. Over the next two and a half weeks, the team ran all 30 benches. Hecht said that turnaround would be nearly impossible with fiberglass or concrete molds, especially for fully custom geometry. If SKYLRK could not get the seating in time, the alternative was not a backup supplier. They would rather have nothing than generic furniture that did not match the brand.

Distributed Manufacturing on a Festival Schedule

Meeting Coachella's deadline meant splitting production. Decibel printed half the benches in New Jersey. Caracol printed the other half in Texas. The pieces then shipped to California for installation. The digital design moved while manufacturing happened simultaneously in two locations.

Caracol CEO Francesco De Stefano called it a practical example of distributed manufacturing: production happens closer to where it is needed instead of in a single centralized factory. The benches measure nearly seven feet long. The circular groupings are almost 13 feet in diameter. They form a continuous sculptural landscape rather than standalone furniture.

Recycled PETG That Can Be Re-Shredded

The material choice matched the brief. The benches were printed with Airtech's recycled PETG GF, reclaimed from industrial waste streams. Decibel says the material is UV-stable, weather-resistant, and fully circular. When the installation comes down, the pieces can be shredded and reprinted into new products rather than discarded.

Hecht also noted that the team kept iterating during production. They printed a new version every day and refined it. At some point SKYLRK said it was good enough and they ran production. That loop is fundamentally different from traditional manufacturing, where tooling costs lock in design decisions early.

Why This Matters

This is not a story about printing faster. It is a story about printing something that would not exist otherwise. The benches could not have been tooled in time. They could not have been shipped from a single factory without missing the festival window. Large-format robotic AM made the installation possible on the schedule the brand demanded.
