A maker's pistol-shaped e-reader case lands squarely in the blind spot of new laws meant to block printed guns.
A joke that turned into a policy problem
Last month, Kentucky creator Luke Blackford, who posts online as Luke The Maker, showed off something absurd. He modeled a pistol-shaped shell for the Xteink X4 e-reader, dropped the device into the grip, and called it the 'Gundle.' It cannot fire. The trigger does nothing. But it looks enough like a handgun to make people uneasy, which is exactly why it matters right now.
Blackford says he did not build it to pick a fight with lawmakers. He just wanted a weird accessory. The problem is that several US states are moving to require 'gun-blocking' software on new 3D printers, and a harmless plastic book cover is the kind of object that software might wrongly flag.
What the laws actually ask for
New York has already signed such a law. California's version passed the state assembly. The idea is that a printer scans each file before printing and refuses anything that looks like a firearm or a regulated part. In theory this stops people from printing working guns at home. In practice, the technology is nowhere near ready.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has pushed back on the California proposal, noting the core problem is false positives. A system that checks files against a database of known gun designs is easy to dodge by changing a model slightly. A system that uses AI to judge shape is more likely to sweep up things that merely resemble guns.
Why a handgun shape is the hard case
Handguns are uniquely troublesome here. Under ATF rules, the part of a handgun that needs a serial number is the frame, and frames come in shapes that overlap with plenty of harmless objects. Water hoses, toy guns, and power tools share roughly similar silhouettes.
Solomon Diamond, an engineering professor at Dartmouth, told The Verge that whether the Gundle gets blocked depends entirely on the method. A hash-based system would ignore it, because it is not a known gun file. A computer-vision system trained on appearance might flag it by mistake. A newer 'geometric identification' approach could tell the difference, but that method is still early for printer blocking.
The real tradeoff
Blackford printed his case on a Bambu Lab H2D in under 24 hours, starting from a free 'gun model' search. He later published the files on his own site rather than a big marketplace, hoping to keep it from spreading too widely. He also admits he has not carried it in public, aware that a gun-shaped object can turn a routine encounter into a dangerous misunderstanding.
The tension is clear. Laws that try to block every gun-shaped file will also block props, art, and commentary. Laws that avoid that will let real weapons through. Policymakers in New York and California have handed the details to expert panels, but no panel can escape the basic math: tighten the filter and you catch innocents, loosen it and you miss the targets.
For now, the Gundle is a tidy illustration of why 'just make printers refuse guns' is harder than it sounds. A plastic case for reading Cormac McCarthy is not a weapon. Convincing software of that difference is the part nobody has solved.
