EOS is joining the EU-funded MAT-H2 group to develop additive manufacturing materials for hydrogen energy applications.
EOS teams up with hydrogen research group
EOS is the latest industrial 3D printing heavyweight to join the MAT-H2 consortium, an EU-funded group working on materials for a hydrogen economy. The move puts EOS's metal AM expertise alongside Wärtsilä's hydrogen development work and a handful of other industrial partners.
The consortium's goal is straightforward: develop the materials and manufacturing processes that hydrogen turbines, fuel cells, and storage tanks will need over the next decade. EOS will contribute metal additive manufacturing know-how, material characterization, and application testing. In practice, that means printing and validating parts that can withstand the extreme pressures and temperatures inside hydrogen energy systems.
This is not EOS's first foray into hydrogen. The company has already built a portfolio of qualified materials for energy applications, including corrosion-resistant alloys suitable for electrolyzers and fuel cell components. Joining MAT-H2 gives it a direct line to the research teams defining what those parts should look like.
For the additive manufacturing industry, the broader signal is that hydrogen is becoming a real customer segment. Consortium-backed programs de-risk material qualification, which is usually the biggest barrier to adopting AM in regulated energy markets. If MAT-H2 delivers on its timeline, EOS and its partners will have a catalog of production-ready hydrogen parts validated to EU standards.
