A printer 400 km above Earth just did its job again

The first metal 3D printer ever sent to space has produced its fifth sample. ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot retrieved the part during the epsilon mission and prepared the machine for its next print, a small but real step toward making things in orbit instead of shipping them up.

Why print metal in space at all

On a long mission far from Earth, carrying a warehouse of spare parts is impossible and resupply may not come. A printer that can make a bracket, a tool, or a fitting on demand changes the math for crew autonomy. The European demonstrator launched to the ISS in 2024 and has been running test prints ever since, each one probing a different part of the process.

What the samples tell us

Three earlier samples came back to Earth and were studied at ESTEC in the Netherlands and the Technical University of Denmark. Researchers compared them against identical prints made on the ground with the same machine. The fifth sample returned on the CRS SpX-34 spacecraft and will be tested at DLR in Germany and at ESTEC. Full results are expected in the coming weeks.

This latest print was interesting for a different reason. The previous attempt had stopped after an anomaly, so the teams used the retrieval to test a recovery procedure and resume the part. Working through failures in orbit is exactly the kind of operational experience that turns a demo into a dependable tool.

The bigger picture

The hardware was built by an Airbus-led team under an ESA contract, with CNES operating it from the ground through the CADMOS centre. ESA technical officer Rob Postema says the program now understands the printer's strengths, limits, and operations well enough to plan the next step toward on-orbit metal printing.

For now it is still a demonstrator, not a workshop. But every sample narrows the gap between 'we printed metal in space once' and 'a crew can make the part they need, when they need it.' That gap is the whole game for missions to the Moon and Mars.
