What Is PLA-Coffee?
eSUN has started shipping a new variant of its PLA filament that incorporates recycled coffee grounds into the polymer mix. The company calls it PLA-Coffee, and the additive is not just a marketing gimmick. Upcycled coffee waste replaces a portion of the standard PLA feedstock, which lowers the material's overall carbon footprint and improves biodegradability.
The filament prints on most FDM machines with minimal tuning. eSUN recommends an extruder temperature of 210 to 230 degrees Celsius and a bed temperature of 55 to 65 degrees Celsius. The company also suggests keeping print speeds under 250 mm/s and running the part cooling fan at full strength for the cleanest results.
Print Quality and Finish
According to eSUN, PLA-Coffee produces a matte surface finish with well-defined layer lines. The coffee additive does not seem to hurt interlayer adhesion. The company claims a balanced mix of strength, stiffness, and toughness that is good enough for concept models and rapid prototyping.
The one acknowledged downside is slight batch-to-batch color variation. Because the coffee grounds are a natural material, each kilogram spool can vary a little in shade. That is not a problem for functional parts, but it is something to keep in mind if you need exact color matching across multiple prints.
Why Coffee Grounds?
Using food waste in filament is not new. Some makers have experimented with coffee grounds mixed into PLA for years, but those DIY recipes often clog nozzles or produce brittle prints. eSUN's version is manufactured under controlled conditions, which keeps the particle size consistent enough to feed reliably through a 1.75 mm nozzle.
The aroma is a real feature, not a bug. The filament releases a coffee scent during printing, which some makers will appreciate and others will not. If you share a workspace or print overnight, the smell can linger.
Market Context
PLA already has strong eco-credentials because it is derived from corn or sugarcane.
