eSUN is turning coffee waste into 3D printing filament. The company's new PLA-Coffee material blends repurposed coffee grounds with polylactic acid, creating a bio-based filament that prints like standard PLA but finishes with a natural matte texture.

How it works

The production process starts with dehydrated, ground coffee waste. That material gets modified and compounded with biodegradable PLA. The result is a filament that retains the ease of printing associated with standard PLA while reducing the carbon footprint tied to conventional plastic manufacturing.

The coffee particles change how light interacts with the printed surface. Instead of the glossy reflections common on standard PLA prints, the filament scatters light across a micro-particle matte finish. That hides layer lines without any post-processing. The color comes from the organic material itself, so there are no artificial dyes involved.

What it's good for

The natural earth tone fits warm interior spaces. Designers are already targeting home decor, planters, pour-over coffee equipment, and desktop ornaments. If your project needs a subtle, non-reflective surface, this filament removes a step from the finishing workflow.
