eSUN has released a new PLA formulation designed specifically for high-speed FDM printing. Called PLA-HF, the filament is engineered to hold together at print speeds that make standard PLA string and delaminate. The company says it stays dimensionally stable up to 300°C hotend temperatures and can sustain extrusion rates above 1000mm/s on a properly configured machine.
What Makes PLA-HF Different
Standard PLA starts to weaken once you push past about 150mm/s on most consumer printers. Layer adhesion drops, corners lift, and bridging becomes unreliable. eSUN says PLA-HF addresses this with a modified molecular structure that gives the molten filament higher melt strength. That matters because faster print speeds mean the extruder pushes plastic through the hotend at a higher volumetric rate. If the material cannot hold its shape as it leaves the nozzle, the print fails regardless of how fast your machine can move.
The result is a filament that eSUN recommends for printers running 300mm/s to 500mm/s as a baseline, with headroom to go faster if the hardware supports it. The company tested it on Bambu Lab, Creality, and Voron-style machines with high-flow hotends and found consistent results across all three platforms.
Specs and Compatibility
PLA-HF comes in the standard 1.75mm and 2.85mm diameters at a quoted tolerance of ±0.02mm. Available colors at launch include black, white, gray, and a translucent natural. The recommended nozzle temperature runs from 190°C to 240°C, with the high-speed sweet spot sitting around 220°C to 230°C on most machines. Bed temperature runs 45°C to 60°C. eSUN says the filament works with any hardened-steel or brass nozzle and does not require an enclosed chamber.
At 1kg spools, pricing sits at roughly $28 to $32 depending on the vendor. That is slightly above eSUN's standard PLA+, which typically runs $22 to $25. The premium reflects the tighter tolerances and the modified polymer formulation.
Where It Fits in the Market
High-speed PLA is becoming a real category. BASF's Ultrafuse PLA and Polymaker's PLA Pro both target similar speed ranges. The difference with PLA-HF is the specific focus on volumetric flow rather than just layer adhesion at moderate speeds. For users who have upgraded to direct-drive extruders, all-metal hotends, or Klipper firmware with input shaping, this is the kind of filament that lets those upgrades actually pay off.
The catch is that not every printer can take advantage of it. A stock Ender 3 with a brass nozzle and 24V hotend will not hit 1000mm/s reliably no matter what filament you use. PLA-HF is aimed at the mid-to-high-end consumer market and the prosumer segment that has already invested in faster motion systems.
Community Response So Far
Early user reports on Reddit and the eSUN user group show prints completing in roughly half the time of standard PLA with no visible quality loss on benchy and calibration cubes. Some users note a slight glossier surface finish compared to PLA+, which may or may not be desirable depending on the use case. Long-term durability testing is still ongoing, and eSUN has not yet published formal data on UV resistance or moisture absorption rates.
