European space startup The Exploration Company closed a $450M Series C to build reusable spacecraft and a heavy-lift rocket engine, putting it in direct competition with SpaceX.

European space logistics startup The Exploration Company has closed a $450 million Series C funding round, the largest ever for a European space company. The round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico, and the Scaleup Europe Fund, with participation from existing investors including Balderton, Plural, Cherry, and Red River West.

Total funding for the Munich and Bordeaux-based company now sits at roughly $680 million since its 2021 founding. The new capital is earmarked for two main programs: Nyx, a reusable cargo capsule, and Storm, a high-thrust rocket engine designed for a future European heavy-lift launcher.

Nyx is the nearer-term product. It is a modular, launcher-agnostic capsule intended to carry cargo to space stations and return it to Earth. The company has targeted November 2028 for the first full-scale orbital demonstration, which would see Nyx dock with the International Space Station and complete a controlled re-entry. Crew capability is planned for a later version.

Storm represents a bigger technical bet. It is a reusable engine burning liquid oxygen and biomethane in a full-flow staged-combustion cycle. TEC says Storm will eventually support a heavy-lift launcher capable of placing up to 40 metric tons into low Earth orbit in reusable configuration. No European company has flown an engine of this type before.

Metal additive manufacturing is already woven into the company's supply chain. TEC uses ATLIX, the rebranded former AM division of TRUMPF, to produce structural and propulsion components for Nyx. Last year the company also acquired Thrustworks Additive Manufacturing GmbH, a German specialist in printing high-value refractory metals such as C103 niobium for rocket engines.

The timing puts The Exploration Company in a crowded field. SpaceX dominates launch services with its reusable Falcon 9 and the in-development Starship. Stoke Space recently closed a $1 billion initial tranche on its Series E, bringing total funding to $2.3 billion. Within Europe, PLD Space and ATMOS Space Cargo are also racing to build sovereign launch capability.

The $450M round signals that investors still believe a European alternative to SpaceX can emerge. The real test will be whether Nyx reaches orbit and Storm fires on a test stand before the money runs out.
