Factory slicer settings are designed for safety, not efficiency. Here is how to tune them and stop throwing away plastic on every print.

The waste is hiding in plain sight

Every time a print finishes, there is a small pile of scrap beside it. Purge lines, support material, brim strips, and the leftover blob from a filament change. Most people accept this as part of the hobby. But a closer look shows that the slicer's default settings, not your design choices, generate the bulk of that waste.

Factory profiles are built for one thing: first-run success. That means generous brims, dense supports, extra walls, and purge towers that eat build plate space. Those settings work. The problem is that they often never get dialed back once you understand your printer, your filament, and your room temperature.

Purge towers are the biggest offender

On a multi-color print, each tool change triggers a purge. The default purge value is usually set high enough to work with any material and any temperature swing. On a model with hundreds of color changes, that adds up fast. The tower can become larger than the part itself.

The fix is straightforward: run a purge test with your specific filament and note the actual minimum needed for a clean transition. Cut the default purge in half and see if the print still comes out clean. Many users report cutting purge waste by 60% or more without a single color bleed.

Brims and supports are oversized by design

A brim that is three lines wide will hold almost anything. It also uses three times the filament of a one-line brim on a stable part. If you are printing on a well-leveled, heated bed with good adhesion, test whether you need the full width. Reduce it incrementally and note the result.

Support density follows the same pattern. The default is often 20% or higher. Drop it to 10% or 15% on models that do not have delicate overhangs. The surface finish might change slightly, but the amount of support material removed and discarded drops significantly.

Walls and infill are another easy target

Three walls is standard in many factory profiles. Two walls can be enough for non-structural parts. The same goes for infill percentages above 20%. If a part does not need to bear load, 15% is often sufficient. These changes take five minutes to test and can shave 20% off material usage on average prints.

Track your waste for one week

The fastest way to see the problem is to keep every scrap in a bin beside the printer for seven days. Most people are shocked at how much plastic goes straight to the trash. Once the total is in front of you, adjusting brims, supports, purge values, and wall counts feels less like a chore and more like a direct cut to the hobby's ongoing cost.
