Two Chinese 3D printer makers filed separate patent applications for systems that automatically swap nozzles or print heads during a job, aiming to cut carriage weight and improve multi-material printing.
FlashForge and Elegoo are both working on automatic nozzle-changing systems for FFF 3D printers, and they each filed patent applications for it in recent weeks. The two companies took different engineering approaches to the same problem: how do you print in multiple colors or materials without dragging a heavier carriage across the build plate?
FlashForge's design, patent CN122425892A, uses a movable rack that holds multiple complete print heads. The printer carriage picks up only the head it needs for the current layer or color, then returns it to the rack when done. The unused heads stay parked, so the moving mass stays low. The patent drawings show four heads on a lateral rail, but the claims don't limit the system to that number.
Elegoo's design, patent CN122425890A, takes a more compact route. It mounts multiple nozzles on a rotating circular plate. The plate spins to align the selected nozzle with the filament path, then lifts it into position. The other nozzles stay seated and wait their turn. This keeps everything clustered around a single support instead of spreading it along a linear rack.
Both systems aim to solve the same headache in multi-material FFF printing. When you mount two or more extruders permanently on the same carriage, you add weight. That weight limits acceleration, increases vibration, and makes precise positioning harder. By keeping unused hotends separate, both designs let the printer move faster and more accurately during the actual extrusion.
The patents also hint at why this matters right now. Multi-color and multi-material printing has become a selling point for consumer and prosumer machines. The Sovol M1D, Prusa INDX, and Bambu Lab AMS all prove there's demand. But current tool-changing systems still carry the penalty of extra mass. A system that physically detaches unused heads could change that equation.
It's worth noting that patent applications are not product announcements. Neither FlashForge nor Elegoo has confirmed they will bring these designs to market. The applications protect intellectual property and signal where the companies are investing R&D. If either company launches a product based on these filings, the automatic nozzle swap could become a differentiator in the next generation of multi-material FFF printers.
