A 3D-printing enthusiast known as SquidInk has published a simple, printable cover called the Flock Sock. It fits over the outside of a Flock Safety license plate camera and blocks the lens without tools, adhesives, or permanent changes to the hardware. The design is available now on Maker World.
The cover slides into place from below and can be lifted off with a standard 1-inch broom handle. That detail matters. Most improvised camera blocks require a ladder, a bag, or a can of spray foam. This one prints in a few hours and deploys in seconds.
Why Someone Built It
Flock cameras have drawn scrutiny in multiple U.S. cities. The systems automatically read license plates and log vehicle movements, then share that data with other agencies. Privacy advocates worry about retention policies, access controls, and the sheer volume of location data collected from people who are not suspected of any crime. Several communities have voted to remove the cameras, while others are expanding coverage.
Public frustration has already produced a pattern of makeshift interference: trash bags, spray paint, insulating foam. Those methods work, but they can damage the camera, leave evidence, or put the person installing them at risk. The Flock Sock is designed to avoid all three. The choice of materials is practical. PLA will soften in direct summer heat. ABS and ASA handle UV exposure and high temperatures better, which matters for a part that sits in direct sunlight on a metal pole. The print itself is straightforward: no supports, no special hardware, and the part can be scaled up or down if local camera housings vary.
What the Flock Sock Actually Proves
The project is less about the specific object and more about how fast 3D printing can turn a frustration into a physical solution. An individual designer can model a part, publish it, and let anyone with a printer reproduce it within hours. That speed is why 3D printing keeps showing up in political and social debates: the technology removes the manufacturing bottleneck between idea and object.
