Six years after FDM stole the spotlight, resin printing has quietly fixed its worst habits. Here's what's genuinely better, and what still isn't.

Why So Many of Us Walked Away From Resin

If you started 3D printing around 2020, chances are your first resin machine was a budget MSLA box with a tiny build volume, a loud little fan, and an aroma that announced itself the moment you opened the lid. The detail was addictive — fine features an FDM nozzle could never resolve — but the workflow was a chore: sticky gloves, messy clean-up, fragile supports, and a room that smelled like a chemistry set.

A lot of us drifted to FDM because it felt cleaner, cheaper to feed, and far more forgiving. Resin became the 'specialty' side of the hobby. But six years later, a familiar story is resurfacing across maker forums and write-ups: people are pulling their resin printers back out, and this time the experience is noticeably different.

What's Genuinely Better in 2026

The single biggest quality-of-life upgrades aren't about raw resolution — they're about the parts of resin printing everyone secretly hated:

  • Smell containment: Modern enclosures actually trap fumes instead of blasting them into the room. Early budget printers dressed up a tiny, noisy fan as 'air filtration' when it mostly just circulated resin-rich air. Today's lids are UV-blocking and seal better, so you can open the machine without immediately clearing the room.
  • Heated vats: Temperature-stable resin means far more reliable first layers and fewer failed prints in a cold garage or workshop.
  • Easier levelling and setup: Assisted bed levelling and better out-of-box calibration have stripped out a lot of the fiddly first-run pain.
  • Better post-processing gear: Affordable wash-and-cure stations turned the dreaded two-bucket dance into a mostly hands-off step.

What Hasn't Really Changed

It's worth tempering expectations. A few things are exactly where they were in 2020:

  • Mono LCDs still rule: Consumer SLA is still overwhelmingly done with monochrome LCDs. DLP resin printers — which used MEMS micro-mirrors for crisper pixels and big weight savings — largely fell by the wayside again, squeezed by scaling limits and disinterested light-engine suppliers.
  • Effective resolution is flat: New printers keep tacking on more 'K' to their panel resolution, but the practical detail you can print often isn't dramatically better than a 2020 budget unit. For most minis and functional parts, you already had 'good enough' years ago.
  • It's still messy: Resin is sticky, and unforgiving. You still need gloves, IPA or a wash station, and a curing step. There is no free lunch.

Should You Give Resin Another Shot?

If you left because of the smell, the cold-weather failures, or the post-processing hassle, 2026 is a legitimate 'comeback' moment — those exact pain points have been engineered down. If you left because resin is fundamentally slower and messier than FDM for big functional parts, that part hasn't changed, and an FDM machine is still the better daily driver.

The smart play for most makers is a hybrid: keep an FDM printer for enclosures, brackets, and big prints, and add a modern resin printer for the detail work — miniatures, molds, dental and jewelry patterns, and anything with fine surface features. The two workflows complement each other better than they ever did.
