A $40 million U.S. Navy-backed 3D printing hub in Guam is on track to reach full operating capacity next February, promising weeks-long parts waits to drop to days.
A new manufacturing foothold in the Pacific
The Guam Additive Materials and Manufacturing Accelerator, known as GAMMA, is on schedule to reach full operating capacity by February 2027. The facility, run by ASTRO America under a $40 million U.S. Navy mandate, aims to cut the wait for critical parts in the Indo-Pacific region from months to weeks.
The applications center sits in Dededo's Pacific Industrial Park. It combines 3D printing production with inspection and validation equipment. Microscope stations, digital inspection tools, robotic welders, and CNC milling machines are already installed. A CT scanner will follow. The goal is to produce parts that meet aerospace and defense standards without sending them across the ocean for certification.
Who benefits first
The U.S. Navy is the principal customer. Submarines, ambulances, and fire engines are the first targets. Parts that are impossible to source locally, or that take months to ship from the mainland, could be printed on-island within weeks.
After the Navy's needs are met, ASTRO plans to bring in other military branches, Guam government agencies, and local organizations. The Guam Power Authority was mentioned as one example. Emergency response vehicles often need parts that do not exist in standard catalogs. On-demand manufacturing solves that.
Workforce as infrastructure
ASTRO is building more than hardware. The organization has partnered with the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Guam to train a local workforce. The long-term plan is to launch a mechanical engineering program at UOG by fall 2027.
Neal Orringer, ASTRO's co-founder, put it plainly: you cannot sustain a manufacturing industry without competent local operators. The training pipeline is as important as the printers themselves.
Why it matters
Most 3D printing hubs sit in the continental US or Europe. Guam is 6,000 miles from California. A fully capable additive manufacturing facility there changes the logistics math for the entire Pacific theater. If the Navy can validate and print parts on-island, the model could spread to other remote bases.
