A $40 million Navy-backed additive manufacturing center in Guam is on track to produce qualified metal and polymer parts on the island by early 2027, cutting months from the Pacific supply chain.
The Guam Additive Materials and Manufacturing Accelerator, or GAMMA, is scheduled to reach full operating capacity by February 2027, according to Neal Orringer of ASTRO America, the nonprofit managing the project.
The facility at Dededo's Pacific Industrial Park is one of the most forward-positioned additive manufacturing sites in the world. It sits inside the very operating area it serves: the Indo-Pacific. That geography is the entire point. Parts for submarines, ambulances, and fire engines that currently take months to ship from the continental US could instead be printed locally in a matter of weeks.
Qualification Takes Longer Than Printing
Orringer and GAMMA director Alex Benham both said the harder work is not running the machines. It is qualifying the parts. Naval standards demand hundreds of pages of data to confirm density, impact resistance, and repeatability. Without that paperwork, a printed part is just a prototype.
The warehouse already holds microscopy gear, digital inspection tools, robotic welders, and CNC mills. An X-ray CT scanner is still on the way. That sequencing matters. Without on-site volumetric inspection, density checks for critical components have to happen elsewhere, which reintroduces the logistics delay GAMMA exists to solve.
Building a Local Workforce
ASTRO has partnered with the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Guam to build training programs. The goal is a sustainable workforce, not a temporary contract crew. Orringer wants a mechanical engineering program on the island starting in fall 2027.
Once the Navy requirement is satisfied, the center will open to other military branches, Guam government agencies, and local organizations. Orringer mentioned conversations with the governor and lieutenant governor about printing parts for emergency response vehicles and Guam Power Authority trucks. Those fleets are grounded because certain components simply cannot be ordered quickly enough from off-island.
Why This Matters for Additive Manufacturing
GAMMA is part of a broader naval strategy to treat 3D printing as a readiness tool rather than a prototyping curiosity. The Navy has already tested cold spray and hybrid directed energy deposition at RIMPAC in Hawaii. What makes GAMMA different is permanence. This is not an expeditionary exercise. It is a permanent factory inside the theater of operations.
The $40 million mandate comes from the Navy's Maritime Industrial Base Program office. The facility will house plastic printers for small pieces, directed energy deposition for large metal components, and laser powder bed fusion for detailed metal parts.
