A $40 million additive manufacturing facility in Dededo is on track to produce Navy ship parts locally, cutting wait times that can stretch for months.

What is GAMMA

The Guam Additive Materials and Manufacturing Accelerator, or GAMMA, is an 8,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility under construction at Dededo's Pacific Industrial Park. Led by the Applied Science and Technology Research Organization of America, or ASTRO America, the project is backed by the U.S. Navy and the government of Guam with a total investment of $40 million.

Once fully operational, the center will house metal 3D printers, plastic printers, metallurgical testing equipment, and reverse-engineering tools. The stated mission is simple: produce mission-critical ship and infrastructure parts on Guam instead of waiting for shipments from the mainland United States or overseas.

New Timeline

ASTRO America president Neal Orringer confirmed that full operating capacity is now targeted for February 2027. That is roughly 15 months after the November 2025 groundbreaking and a revision from earlier plans that aimed for initial operations by late summer 2026. Orringer said the delay reflects the complexity of standing up industrial additive manufacturing equipment in a remote location, not a funding or commitment problem.

The facility will eventually employ around 80 people and serve the Navy first. After the Navy requirement is met, ASTRO intends to open the center to other military branches, Guam government agencies, and local organizations. Guam Power Authority vehicles and emergency response fleets have already been cited as candidates for local on-demand production.

Workforce Development

ASTRO has partnered with the University of Guam and the Colorado School of Mines to build training programs alongside the factory floor. The goal is to certify a local workforce in additive manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and quality assurance. Alex Benham, GAMMA's director and general manager, has repeatedly highlighted the demand for skilled technicians on the island and said there is genuine hunger for careers in advanced manufacturing.

Why Location Matters

Guam sits inside the operating area it serves, which is the entire argument for building here instead of on the mainland. A broken pump, bracket, or valve aboard a ship or at a power station can currently take weeks to replace because replacement parts must travel thousands of miles. GAMMA is designed to shrink that window to hours or days. Orringer put it plainly: this will be a world-class factory, and it happens to be in Guam rather than California or Texas.

If the February 2027 target holds, GAMMA will represent one of the most strategically located additive manufacturing assets in the Pacific and a model for how remote military and civilian infrastructure can use local 3D printing to reduce logistical bottlenecks.
