Hembased says its new plant-based filament is the first cold-compostable 3D printing material that breaks down in open air.

A filament that rots instead of lingering

Hembased has launched a filament made from palm leaves, and the company is making a bold claim. It says this is the first cold-compostable, biobased alternative to standard 3D printing plastics. Print a part, toss it in a backyard compost bin, and it should break down.

Most eco filaments on the shelf are PLA. PLA is plant-derived, but it needs industrial composting at high heat to actually degrade. Leave it in your garden and it sits there for years. Hembased says its material is different because it is designed to break down in open-air compost at normal temperatures.

What it is actually made from

The feedstock is palm leaf biomass. The company frames the material as plant-based FDM stock for people who want prints to disappear when their job is done, rather than outlive them in a landfill.

That has real uses. Prototypes, packaging, exhibition pieces, and anything printed for a short life could be composted instead of binned. For educators and makers who print constantly, the appeal is obvious.

The catch nobody should skip

Independent coverage has been cautious. All3DP notes that while Hembased describes the material as backyard-compostable, the scientific analysis and certification details remain unclear. Cold-compostable is an easy phrase to print on a spool. Proving it in a home compost heap is harder.

This is the part buyers should watch. If the claim holds up under testing, palm-leaf filament could be a genuine step forward for low-waste printing. If it does not, it joins a long line of green labels that sound better than they perform.

Should you care?

For most daily printing, PLA and PETG will stay the practical choice. But a material that truly composts at room temperature would fill a gap those plastics leave open. Hembased has thrown down a claim worth testing, and the community will be the one to confirm it.

For now, treat the compostable promise as unproven and the launch as interesting. The 3D printing world has heard green claims before. This one gets credit for aiming at the right problem.
