Joris Peels just published Part 3 of his market analysis series on 3DPrint.com, and the most provocative claim is that the "high-speed PLA" era was mostly excellent branding. Yes, faster printers exposed quality issues in older filament batches. Yes, manufacturers reformulated materials. But Peels argues that the chemistry did not need a revolution. The hotends, nozzles, and heatbreaks did.

The slide that started the controversy shows three strategic paths for filament makers: convenience lock-in, super tolerance brands, and value players. Peels thinks ColorFabb's innovation strategy got left out of that picture. He also sees a gap for community-focused filaments. Tabletop gamers, cosplayers, model aircraft builders, and university print farms all need something different from generic PLA.

Meanwhile, Bambu Lab functions less like a printer company and more like a supermarket in the filament space. The company uses its user data and steep periodic discounts to sell house-brand filament at scale. That keeps mid-tier brands under constant price pressure. Polymaker has carved out a successful premium niche, but the companies stuck squarely in the middle are struggling to justify their existence.

The lesson for buyers is straightforward: your new $200 printer can probably run older filament just fine if you tune the settings. The $3 premium per spool for "high-speed" formulations buys you convenience, not magic.
