A new Pennsylvania startup founded by former LulzBot leaders is building secure, US-made 3D printers specifically for defense customers. The first machine debuts this month under $10,000.

A printer built around a single constraint

Homefront Manufacturing is a new 3D printer company based in Claysburg, Pennsylvania. It does not aim at hobbyists, educators, or general prosumers. The entire company is focused on one customer: the US military and its supply chain.

The company came out of NPC, a long-established secure paper-printing operation that services government and defense clients. As document demand has softened, NPC is diversifying into additive manufacturing. To lead the effort, it hired John and Sierra Olhoft, the former leadership team behind FAME 3D and the LulzBot brand. Their experience manufacturing open, ruggedized FFF machines in the US gives Homefront a foundation that most defense-focused startups lack.

Why the military needs its own printer line

The argument for a defense-specific desktop 3D printer is straightforward. The US military has massive and growing budgets for additive manufacturing, partly because drone and counter-drone operations have exploded. Those platforms need spare parts, housings, and custom brackets, many of which can be printed on demand close to the front line.

But current US policy blocks the armed forces from using foreign-built 3D printers in many contexts. Meanwhile, roughly 88% of global desktop 3D printer sales come from four Chinese manufacturers. That concentration creates a supply chain risk that defense procurement is starting to treat as a vulnerability, not just a cost issue.

Homefront's response is a machine designed and assembled in the US, with secure firmware and a supply chain that can be audited end to end. The company has not published full specifications, but the hidden filenames on its website point to a product codenamed Alpha. The target price is below $10,000.

What we know so far

The team's background suggests a ruggedized FFF platform rather than a resin or powder system. John Olhoft's recent LinkedIn posts emphasize reliability, repeatability, and performance in demanding environments. Sierra Olhoft's prior work at LulzBot covered open-hardware development, community-driven testing, and direct-manufacturer support models. Homefront will likely combine that operational experience with tighter security controls and a narrower feature set aimed at functional parts rather than hobby use.

The company plans to reveal the full machine at J-DAMMIT later this month, an event that brings together defense manufacturers and additive technology providers. If the debut lands well, Homefront could fill a gap that has widened since the early 2020s: a US-built, defense-vetted desktop 3D printer that does not depend on overseas components for critical hardware or firmware.

The larger context

This is not the first American FFF startup, but it is one of the few that has identified a specific, well-funded customer before shipping a single machine. Most consumer and prosumer brands chase volume. Homefront is chasing clearance. If it can deliver a printer that passes military environmental and cybersecurity standards at a sub-$10,000 price, the demand will likely exceed its initial production capacity.

For now, the company is collecting early-access signups on its website. Those interested can join the list for release details, field testing updates, and preorder priority. Whether Homefront becomes a lasting name in defense manufacturing will depend on the machine it shows this month, but the logic behind the company is hard to argue with.
