A group of former DJI engineers turned Bambu Lab into the biggest name in consumer 3D printing by solving the problems that kept newcomers away.
The DJI origin story
Bambu Lab started in 2020 with a team of engineers from DJI, the Chinese drone and camera company. They looked at consumer 3D printing and saw a market full of machines that demanded technical skill. Calibration, bed leveling, temperature tuning, and filament selection were all hurdles a new user had to clear before the printer would produce anything useful. The Bambu Lab team decided to remove those hurdles instead of writing better documentation.
What the X1 Series got right
The first Bambu Lab printers introduced features that were rare in consumer machines at the time: AI-assisted monitoring, automatic calibration, and a multi-material system called AMS that let users print in up to four colors or materials in a single job. High-speed printing was the headline, but the real innovation was reliability. A printer that finishes a 12-hour job without a failed layer changes how people think about the technology.
The product lineup today
The X1 Series was followed by the P1 Series, which trades some premium features for speed and a lower price. The A1 Series is the entry point: simpler, reliable, and aimed at people who have never held a filament spool. The H2C is the newest machine, introducing the Vortek Hotend Change System for automatic tool switching during multi-material prints. Each model targets a different buyer, but they all share the same core idea: the printer should work for you, not the other way around.
The criticism is worth noting
Bambu Lab does not get a free pass. The ecosystem is relatively closed compared to open-source printers like those from Prusa. Modification and repair are harder when the company controls the firmware, the slicer, and the spare parts. Accessory costs run higher than the hobbyist-grade machines from a few years ago. Users who enjoy tinkering may find Bambu Lab restrictive.
Why it worked anyway
Most buyers do not want to tinker. They want a printer that produces good parts on the first attempt and does not require a weekend of troubleshooting. Bambu Lab delivered that consistency at a time when competing consumer machines still struggled with bed adhesion and stringing. The company also built MakerWorld, a model repository that gives new users something to print immediately. That removes the last barrier: the blank slicer screen.
Within a few years, Bambu Lab became one of the leading consumer 3D printing brands globally. The lesson is simple: remove friction, even if it means controlling more of the stack. Some users will push back, but most will just print.
