HT PETG promises PETG ease with ABS-like heat resistance. Here is how to dry it, what temps to use, and where it actually beats regular PETG.

Regular PETG has a heat problem

Standard PETG is a great everyday filament. It is tougher than PLA, prints without an enclosure, and shrugs off most chemicals. Then summer arrives. Leave a PETG print on a dashboard or next to a warm power supply and it starts to soften around 70C. That is the glass transition point, and it is lower than most people expect.

HT PETG is the fix the community has wanted for years. Proto Pasta kicked it off, and now brands like Polymaker and eSUN ship their own versions. The pitch is simple: keep PETG's easy, enclosure-free printing, but push the heat deflection temperature up to roughly 85 to 90C. You get parts that survive a hot car and keep their shape near electronics.

What actually changes

HT PETG is not a different polymer family. It is PETG with added copolymers or modifiers that raise its heat resistance. The trade-off is that it is a little more sensitive than plain PETG. It wants to be dry, and it prints best a touch hotter than the standard stuff.

In a recent field test, the 3D Printing Nerd took a Bambu A2L down to a lake and ran Proto Pasta's HT PETG through it. No enclosure, no drama. That is the whole point. If you can print normal PETG, you can print this.

Dry it before you trust it

HT PETG soaks up moisture just like regular PETG, and wet filament is the fastest way to a failed print. Drop it in a dryer at 65 to 70C for four to six hours before a big job. If you hear popping or see fuzzy edges on the first layer, it is wet. Dry it again.

Settings that work

Start from your normal PETG profile and nudge it:

  • Nozzle: 245 to 260C. HT grades like the heat. Too cool and layers will not bond.
  • Bed: 75 to 85C for the first layers, then you can ease back to 70C.
  • Cooling: treat it like PETG. Moderate fan on overhangs, low or off on the first layers.
  • Speed: slow the first layer to 30mm/s or less. HT PETG sticks well, but a calm start avoids warping.

Where it earns its place

Skip HT PETG for a phone stand or a drawer handle. Plain PETG is cheaper and easier there. Reach for it when heat is in the picture: mount brackets near a power supply, parts for a greenhouse or a car, anything that lives in direct sun. Those are the jobs where the extra heat resistance pays for the slightly higher spool price.

One honest caveat. HT PETG still is not ABS or ASA for sustained high heat. If a part sits above 90C for hours, move up to a true engineering filament. For the 80 to 90C range that wrecks normal PETG, this stuff is the sweet spot.
