A fresh Weibo leak says Apple still hasn't locked the hinge tech for its foldable iPhone Ultra, and titanium 3D printing is now a real contender against liquid metal.

The Leak: A Hinge Still Up for Grabs

A Weibo post from tipster Fixed Focus Digital claims Apple has not finalized the hinge manufacturing technology for its first foldable iPhone — widely expected to be called the iPhone Ultra. The contradiction at the center of the leak: supply chain chatter points two different ways on whether the hinge will be liquid metal or titanium 3D printing, and Apple has confirmed nothing on the record.

Why 3D Printing Is Suddenly in the Conversation

The case for additive just got a lot stronger thanks to work elsewhere in the supply chain. BLT iterated on the approach for OPPO's Find N6, consolidating the hinge's wing plates from 13 individually machined components into a single printed titanium structure. That's the kind of part-count collapse additive manufacturing is built for — fewer welds, fewer tolerance stacks, and a stiffer final assembly.

Liquid Metal's Counter-Argument

Liquid metal (amorphous alloy) remains the other front-runner because it can be formed fast and offers excellent strength-to-weight and scratch resistance. The open question for Apple isn't whether either technology works in a lab — it's whether it scales to Apple's volume. The Elec's reporting is described as the most concrete on the manufacturing approach, while Android Headlines cites supply chain sources saying there are no delays to the current timeline.

Timing and Volume

The phone is still expected to debut in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts pre-orders may not open until Q4, with only 0.5 to 1 million units shipping in Q3 out of an estimated 7 to 8 million total run. Pricing is expected between $2,300 and $2,500 — which would make it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold.

What This Means for 3D Printing

Even if Apple ultimately picks liquid metal, the fact that titanium 3D printing is a genuine finalist for a flagship consumer hinge is a milestone. Foldable hinges are exactly the high-mix, geometrically complex, strength-critical parts where metal AM shines — and a win here would pull additive manufacturing squarely into consumer electronics at scale, the same way it already has in aerospace and medical.
