For the designer's FW26-27 runway show, Sculpteo manufactured five distinct looks using HP Multi Jet Fusion, working in TPU and PA12 to produce components that no traditional atelier could make on a show deadline.

Printing What Cannot Be Sewn

The five looks share one trait: each demands geometries that resist conventional fabrication. Look 7 centers on a sculptural bustier base 3D-printed in raw MJF TPU. That base received extensive hand finishing: sanding, priming, multiple latex dipping cycles to match the model's skin tone, individually crafted anatomical details, painted beauty marks, and an integrated zipper running up the back. The printed part is the armature. Everything else is couture handwork layered on top.

Look 19 takes a different approach. Instead of one large part, the team printed dozens of individual petals in PA12, then assembled them by hand into a three-dimensional composition. The petals are lightweight and intricate. Because each one prints separately, the design allows fine control over the final shape without committing to a single monolithic mold.

Look 26 comes closest to pure engineering. A custom TPU structure, printed as a single continuous element, defines the garment's silhouette. The material stays flexible and light, so the dress holds its sculptural shape without rigid boning. Here the printer is not decorating a garment but constructing it. Computational design carries the form; handwork adds the finish.

Why Fashion Turns to Multi Jet Fusion

Couture ateliers can execute almost anything by hand, but not every geometry and not under a show schedule. MJF removes the tooling constraint. Parts print straight from the digital file, no molds, no per-variant setup cost. That matters when the deadline is Paris Fashion Week and the design changes two days before the show.

TPU brings elasticity that PA12 lacks. For a bustier that must move with a model, TPU absorbs stress without cracking. PA12 offers stiffness and fine detail, which is why it works for petals and structured components. Using both materials in the same collection is not arbitrary. It is a material choice matched to each look's mechanical needs.

The Bigger Pattern

This is not an isolated experiment. In March 2026, Kaneko Optical released UROKO for Issey Miyake Men, a 3D-printed eyewear collection that abandons conventional frame geometry. In July, designer Laura Civetti presented Adaptive System, a garment built from physiological body data instead of a standard size chart. Gaultier's collection sits on the more conservative side of that line: discrete printed parts, integrated by hand, timed for a runway.

The lesson is consistent. 3D printing enters fashion as a component supplier, not a replacement for craft. The printer makes the hard geometry. The atelier makes it wearable.
