Miami-based Kind Designs has closed a $10 million Pre-Series A at a $70 million valuation, doubling the round it originally set at $5 million after investor interest ballooned to nearly $20 million. The oversubscribed raise signals strong appetite for climate-adaptation infrastructure built with additive manufacturing.

Concrete that behaves like a reef

Kind Designs uses large-format concrete 3D printing to produce seawalls whose surfaces are sculpted to function as marine habitat — textured, nook-filled structures that invite oysters, mussels, and other organisms to colonise them. Unlike a flat poured wall, the printed geometry mimics natural shoreline features, buffering wave energy while rebuilding lost estuary ecosystems. It is coastal defence and reef restoration in a single build.

Why investors are paying attention

The round drew a roster of high-profile backers, including entrepreneur Mark Cuban and NBA star Kyle Kuzma, alongside groups such as NY Angels and PARTANNA. Founder and CEO Anya Freeman has positioned the company at the intersection of two booming markets: shoreline protection and nature-based climate resilience. With hurricanes intensifying and insurance markets retreating from coastal exposure, printed-and-living seawalls offer a compelling alternative to brittle grey infrastructure.

The bigger picture

Construction-scale 3D printing has spent years chasing the housing market; Kind Designs is a reminder that some of the most bankable near-term use cases are civic and environmental rather than residential. If the company can drive cost per linear metre down through repeatable, automated prints, 3D printed living shorelines could become a standard line item in coastal municipalities' climate budgets.

For now, the $10M gives Kind Designs the runway to scale from bespoke installs to volume production — and to prove that the walls it prints are as durable as the ecosystems they are meant to seed.
