Braces That Actually Fit

Teeth are as unique as fingerprints. That is why forensic dentists can identify people from their bite. Most metal braces, though, are one-size-fits-all. A Boston-area company called LightForce is changing that with 3D printed brackets custom made for every patient.

How It Works

LightForce takes a digital scan from the orthodontist's office and turns it into a unique bracket. Each bracket has its own identification number. The parts are 3D printed in metal at a facility in Wilmington, Massachusetts, then polished and shipped to the clinic.

The precision needed is extreme. Millimeters matter in the mouth. A fraction of a millimeter off and the tooth moves wrong. The 3D printing process hits that tolerance consistently.

Real Results

The factory has produced about 16 million unique brackets and served roughly 200,000 patients. Katie Doran, LightForce's Vice President of Operations, was the first patient to try the system. She wore braces for 7.5 months and needed just six appointments.

Co-founder Alfred Griffin says patients save about half the treatment time and up to 60% fewer visits compared to conventional braces. That is a big difference for teenagers and parents alike.

The Scaling Problem

The biggest challenge now is keeping up. Once a scan reaches the factory, it takes about a month to ship the finished brackets back. Demand is growing fast, and LightForce is scaling production to match.

Why It Matters

This is additive manufacturing moving into everyday healthcare. Metal 3D printing has been used in aerospace and automotive for years. Now it is improving smiles in New England.
