A startup-backed four-head FFF printer with linear motors and a $1,099 Kickstarter price targets multi-color printing without the purge waste.
Four Print Heads at Once
LightMake, a desktop 3D printing startup, is taking deposits for the L4, a four-head fused filament fabrication printer built around direct-drive linear motors. The company says it is the first machine of its kind to combine four independent print heads with linear motor motion. Each head pre-heats independently, and the system claims a 1-second tool change with no purge filament between colors. That is the central pitch: multicolor printing without the material waste that normally comes with it.
Traditional multicolor FFF printers change material through a single extruder, dumping the old filament before loading the new one. That purge stream can run to several centimeters per swap, adding up fast on long prints with many color changes. LightMake's approach keeps four filaments loaded simultaneously. A head that is not printing lifts out of the way. The next head moves in, pre-heated, within about a second.
The four heads can also operate in parallel. LightMake says the L4 can print four copies of the same object at once, effectively quadrupling throughput for production runs. The practical ceiling is printer stability and bed adhesion, not head count. A rigid frame and vibration management system are part of the spec for that reason.
Linear Motors Instead of Belts
The L4 replaces the belts that drive most FFF motion systems with direct-drive linear motors on the X and Y axes. LightMake claims a position accuracy of plus or minus 1 micrometer, a 50,000-hour-plus lifespan, and no belt wear adjustments over the printer's life. The motors also enable faster acceleration without the ringing and ghosting that belts can produce at high speeds. LightMake has capped the maximum print speed at 500 mm/s and acceleration at 20 m/s squared to keep print quality stable at those speeds.
The die-cast frame and active vibration cancellation system are designed to support that speed ceiling. LightMake says the printer can move at up to 1,000 mm/s travel speed without losing positional accuracy, though the actual extrusion speed stays lower to maintain quality. That distinction between travel speed and print speed is worth tracking when this ships. A lot of marketing material conflates the two.
Pricing and Availability
The L4 launches on Kickstarter later in August 2026. Deposits of $50 are currently being collected through LightMake's website in exchange for VIP access to the campaign. The VIP price is $1,099 for the L4, against a planned retail price of $2,399. That is a discount of $1,300. Backers who order within the first 48 hours of the Kickstarter launch also receive a 4 kg multi-color PLA bundle, valued at $79.
A single-head version called the L1 shares the same linear motor platform at a VIP price of $899, against a planned MSRP of $1,599. The L1 uses one print head and targets makers who want the motion system without the four-head complexity. Both models ship in November 2026, according to LightMake's current timeline.
Caveats
Four independent heads is a mechanically complex claim. LightMake has not shipped a production machine yet. This is a crowdfunding launch, and fulfillment dates are not guaranteed. The 1-second tool change and zero-purge claims need to hold up on real prints. Printers with multiple heads have a history of failing on the details: head interference, bed leveling across four tool positions, and software that actually coordinates parallel prints.
At $1,099 for the L4 on Kickstarter, the entry price is lower than a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon or Prusa MK4S. If LightMake delivers on its promises, it is a genuinely interesting machine for multicolor production work. If it does not, it is another crowdfunding printer that looked compelling on paper.
