A startup called LightMake is launching a Kickstarter for a four-head FFF printer with direct-drive linear motors, promising near-zero purge waste and 1-second color changes.
LightMake, a desktop 3D printing startup, is preparing a Kickstarter campaign for the L4, a machine it calls the world's first independent four-head FFF printer powered by linear motors. The claim is specific: four print heads that operate as four independent printers in one compact unit, with direct-drive linear motors replacing belts entirely.
The headline benefit is purge waste. Current multi-material printers waste a lot of filament during color changes, sometimes 80 percent or more of the material loaded for a switch. LightMake says the L4 eliminates most of that by keeping four pre-heated toolheads always loaded and ready. Each color has its own dedicated nozzle, so the printer swaps materials in roughly 1 second instead of the 5-plus seconds typical of single-nozzle systems. The company claims a 79 percent reduction in tool-changing time compared to conventional multi-material setups.
The four heads can run simultaneously, which LightMake says quadruples output for batch production. Print four complete models in the time a standard printer finishes one. The heads can lift up to 5mm to avoid collisions during travel moves.
The linear motor claim is the more structural one. Traditional FFF printers use rubber belts and pulleys on the X and Y axes. LightMake replaces those with direct-drive linear motors, which the company says deliver zero transmission loss, instant acceleration, and ultra-crisp stops. The motors are tuned to a maximum print speed of 500mm/s and acceleration of 20m/s², intentionally capped below the physical limit for stability. Linear motors also enable closed-loop position control with an accuracy of plus or minus 1 micrometer, which LightMake says eliminates layer shifts. Non-contact magnetic propulsion removes mechanical friction and wear, giving a claimed 10x longer lifespan than belt-driven setups and over 50,000 hours of operation without belt tensioning or replacement.
The frame is die-cast for rigidity, and LightMake includes a vibration cancellation system to suppress ringing and ghosting even at the top speed.
Build volume on the L4 is 354x370x386mm in single-color mode, with up to 16 colors supported when paired with an AMS-style system. Four colors come built in.
LightMake is taking $50 refundable deposits on its website ahead of the Kickstarter launch. Backers who lock in the VIP price pay $1,099, which the company says is $1,300 below the planned retail price, plus a free PLA filament bundle. A single-head variant called the L1 uses the same core technology and is offered at $899 for VIP backers.
The Kickstarter goes live later this month. Shipping is projected to start in November 2026. As with any crowdfunding campaign, fulfillment is not guaranteed, and early backers carry the usual risk of delays or shortfalls.
The beltless linear motor concept is not entirely new in industrial motion systems, but applying it to a consumer multi-head FFF printer at this price point would be a genuine shift if LightMake delivers. The four-head architecture also addresses a real pain point in multi-material printing: purge waste. Whether the company can hit its speed, precision, and reliability targets at volume remains to be seen. Backers will find out soon enough.
