Modovolo has chosen Lyten's PA1205 graphene-enhanced filament as the default material for its BFP platform, a modular, containerized 3D printing system designed to manufacture aerospace and defense-grade parts at the point of use. The partnership is aimed at building a fully domestic additive manufacturing supply chain, from raw material to finished component.

The BFP, which stands for Build. Fly. Print., is a large-format industrial 3D printing system engineered to be deployed anywhere in the world without depending on outside supply chains. Modovolo says the platform is built entirely around U.S.-sourced materials and equipment. By adopting Lyten's PA1205 filament as the standard feedstock, the company is closing the loop on domestic sourcing from top to bottom.

What PA1205 Actually Delivers

PA1205 is a nylon-based filament infused with Lyten's proprietary 3D Graphene technology. The company claims the material doubles X and Y axis tensile strength compared to carbon fiber-reinforced PA12, adds 40% more Z-axis strength, and improves impact resistance by 50%. Print speed and temperature performance also improve, while warping and dimensional accuracy problems diminish.

Those claims point to a specific set of problems in large-format 3D printing: warping has always been the main reason engineers hesitate to trust polymer AM for structural aerospace parts. If PA1205 actually delivers on its numbers, it changes the calculation for what can be printed in a container on a ship deck or at a forward operating base.

A Materials-to-Hardware Bet on Reshoring

The partnership has a clear commercial logic. Modovolo has been using Lyten filaments since 2025 to manufacture parts for its Lift Quadcopter-X, an ultra-lightweight drone built for commercial, first responder, and defense missions. The BFP platform extends that relationship from a single product line to a full manufacturing system.

Lyten, headquartered in San Jose, California, started as an energy storage and lithium-sulfur battery company. Its move into 3D printing materials is part of a broader effort to apply its 3D Graphene technology across industries. The company holds more than 1,100 granted or pending patents. PA1205 launched commercially in December 2025 at the Performance Racing Industry Show, initially targeted at motorsports and racing hardware before finding its way into aerospace applications.

Why This Matters Beyond the Press Release

The Pentagon has been steadily tightening domestic sourcing requirements for defense suppliers, and additive manufacturing sits at the center of that shift. Containerized 3D printing systems like Modovolo's BFP let military units manufacture replacement parts and structural components close to where they are deployed, cutting the logistics chain that traditionally stretches from a factory overseas to a ship or forward base. By controlling both the filament chemistry and the printer platform, Modovolo and Lyten are positioning the BFP as an end-to-end alternative to parts that have traditionally relied on imported carbon fiber and offshore machining.

The companies plan to demonstrate the BFP running on Lyten filaments at the Civil-Military Innovation Institute and the Northern Strike military exercise later this year.
