You don't need an expensive automatic material system to get multicolor prints. A slicer pause and some patience gets the job done.
The Pause-at-Layer Method
You don't need an AMS to produce multicolor 3D prints. The trick is simple: pause the print at a specific layer, swap filament, and resume. Every modern slicer supports it, and the only cost is a few centimeters of filament spent cleaning out the old color.
The process starts in your slicer. Preview the model layer by layer and pick the exact layer where the color change should happen. Insert a pause command at that layer. When the printer reaches it, the nozzle moves aside, the print halts, and you unload the current filament. Load the new color and hit resume. Everything above that layer prints in the new material.
Some slicers handle this more cleanly than others. OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio, and Elegoo Slicer all let you add a change filament command that automatically unloads the previous material and waits for you to insert the new one. On machines without a built-in pause script, you can edit the G-code directly and insert an M400 pause command at a specific line.
This method has real limits. You can only change color at layer boundaries, which means horizontal bands of color are easy, but fine detail within a single layer is not. You cannot easily print a logo with two colors side by side in the same layer. That is exactly why AMS systems exist.
Even with those limits, the technique opens up practical projects. Two-tone vases, signs with colored bases, and multipart models with contrasting text or logos all work well. One maker printed a multipart Normandy SR-2 model by adding black text and blue Alliance logos to white hull parts using manual pauses.
The biggest advantage is waste. AMS systems purge several centimeters of filament during each color change. Manual swapping wastes almost nothing. Print time stays the same because the pause does not add any extrusion.
If you have been eyeing multicolor prints but balked at the price of an AMS, try the pause-at-layer method first. It is not automated, but it is cheap, quiet, and surprisingly effective.
