NIOSH has released new downloadable graphics to help workplaces limit 3D printer emissions and protect workers from ultrafine particles.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has created a set of printable safety graphics aimed at workplaces that use 3D printers. The materials are designed to help employees understand the risks of fused deposition modeling emissions and take simple steps to reduce their exposure. It is a low-tech approach to a problem that many makerspaces, schools, and small manufacturers still ignore.
What the Guidance Covers
NIOSH research has shown that desktop FDM printers emit ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds during normal operation. The amount varies based on filament type, nozzle temperature, and printer design, but even PLA can release measurable amounts of respirable particles. ABS and nylon filaments produce higher emissions, including styrene and caprolactam vapors.
The new graphics break down three main control strategies. First, ventilation: printers should operate in well-ventilated spaces, and local exhaust capture near the print head works better than relying on room air changes alone. Second, filtration: HEPA filters with activated carbon can remove both particles and chemical vapors from the air. Third, enclosure: a sealed enclosure with filtered exhaust contains emissions at the source.

3D printers have moved from garages and labs into libraries, schools, and small production shops. That expansion happened faster than safety guidance could keep up. NIOSH has been studying additive manufacturing emissions for years, but most of that research stays locked in technical reports that non-specialists never read. Practical Steps for Any Workplace
If your office, school, or workshop runs more than one 3D printer, start by moving them away from high-traffic areas. A dedicated enclosure with filtered ventilation is the most effective fix, but it does not have to be expensive. Many users build enclosures from plywood and acrylic, then add a cheap inline blower with a HEPA-carbon filter combo. The enclosure also helps with print quality by keeping temperature swings from ruining ABS or polycarbonate parts.
Filament choice matters more than most people realize. PLA emits fewer particles than ABS, but even PLA is not zero-risk. If you print with nylon, PETG-CF, or any material with additives, treat the printer like a small chemical source and ventilate accordingly.
