Onkos Surgical announced the completion of its 1,000th case using the My3D patient-specific pelvic implant platform. The milestone marks a shift from experimental 3D-printed surgery to a repeatable clinical workflow for complex pelvic reconstruction.
What My3D actually is
My3D is not a single implant. It is a bundled service that combines collaborative case planning, advanced imaging, 3D anatomic modeling, and patient-specific implant design. Surgeons work with Onkos engineers to plan the resection, then the implant geometry is printed to match the exact defect left behind.
That sequence is the opposite of standard orthopedic practice. Off-the-shelf implants force the surgeon to adapt the patient to the hardware. Patient-specific design does the reverse: the hardware fits the patient.
Why the pelvis is hard
The pelvis is one of the most challenging regions for reconstruction. Bone loss, tumor involvement, and revision history mean standard implants often fail. Patient-specific geometry can restore the native center of rotation and provide fixation where generic parts cannot.
Onkos says its engineers have developed the design process through close collaboration with surgeons across more than 350 academic medical institutions. Clinical feedback from each case feeds back into the platform, tightening delivery times and refining implant geometry.
What 1,000 cases proves
Printing a custom pelvic implant has been technically possible for years. Making it fast and cheap enough to be a routine option is different. Onkos claims world-class delivery times and commercially competitive pricing, arguing that personalization can operate with catalogue-product discipline.
Jeff Barry, MD, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF, put it plainly: "Patient-specific implant solutions can provide surgeons with an important reconstructive option when treating cases where standard approaches may not provide an adequate treatment. This product is the future of acetabular revision surgery, available now."
The 1,000th case does not just reflect manufacturing scale. It reflects that enough surgeons now trust the workflow enough to use it repeatedly.
