OrcaSlicer 2.4.0 is here with Orca Cloud for cross-device sync, wave overhang support, and profiles for the new Voron Trident R2, a massive update for the open-source slicer.
The Open-Source Slicer Keeps Getting Better
OrcaSlicer 2.4.0 has been released, and it is one of the most significant updates in the project history. Headlining the release is Orca Cloud, a new sync service that lets you access your printer profiles, filament presets, and print settings across multiple devices. For anyone who switches between a desktop and a laptop, or manages a print farm, this is a genuine workflow improvement.
Wave Overhangs — Print Overhangs Without Supports
One of the most exciting technical additions is wave overhang support. Originally developed as a fork by community member Dennis Klappe, the feature has now been integrated into the main OrcaSlicer release. Wave overhangs use a sinusoidal toolpath pattern on overhanging perimeters, allowing the extruded filament to partially support itself by bridging between wave peaks. The result: cleaner overhangs without support material, faster print times, and less post-processing.
This is the kind of innovation that makes open-source software so powerful. A single developer spots a problem, builds a solution, and within months it is in the hands of millions of users.
Voron Trident R2 and Other Updates
The Voron Trident R2 — the latest revision of the popular CoreXY design — now has official profiles in OrcaSlicer 2.4.0. The R2 update brings improved kinematics, better cooling, and a refined toolhead mounting system. Having day-one slicer support is a big deal for the Voron community, which has historically had to rely on community-maintained profiles.
Other notable additions include improved multi-plate project management, better STEP file import with assembly view preservation, and significant performance improvements in slicing large models.
Orca Cloud — Free During Beta
Orca Cloud is free during its beta period. It syncs printer profiles, filament settings, and process presets. Notably, it does not sync your actual 3D model files or project data — those stay local. The service is opt-in and can be disabled entirely if you prefer to keep everything offline.
The move to cloud sync puts OrcaSlicer in closer competition with Bambu Studio, which has had cloud features for a while. But OrcaSlicer remains fully open-source and supports printers from every major manufacturer — not just Bambu Lab.
