Pirelli commissioned artists to 3D print this year's Italian Grand Prix trophy from nylon powder. It's called FRAGILE, and it looks exactly like a stack of dishes waiting to fall.
A Trophy That Looks Like It's About to Crash
This weekend's Italian Grand Prix podium will feature one of Formula 1's strangest awards yet. Pirelli unveiled FRAGILE, a trophy that resembles a wobbly stack of cups and small bowls. It's 3D printed from nylon powder, then painted, galvanized, and polished to a reflective shine.
The piece comes from Italian artistic duo vedovamazzei: Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino. Pirelli and the Pirelli HangarBicocca Museum of Contemporary Art chose them for the sixth annual commission. The artists say the design came from noticing a celebratory cup in the kitchen sink. They wanted the trophy to capture how victory in Formula 1 is shared, unstable, and must be reclaimed every race.
Manufacturing the trophy wasn't simple. The team started with hand drawings and paper sketches. They then used a selective 3D printing process with nylon powder to build the form. After printing, each piece was painted, galvanized, and polished. The result is fully stable despite its precarious appearance. Drivers won't need to worry about bowls flying off during champagne celebrations.
Four versions exist. The largest goes to the race winner and the winning constructor. Smaller copies go to second and third place. Pirelli has made a tradition of unusual Italian GP trophies. This one might be the most memorable yet.
